Help CHF Raise Funds to Renovate
Town-Owned Farmer Housing at Barrett’s Mill Farm

Donate to Support Farmer Housing in Concord

The Town of Concord owns farmer housing on two farms in Concord. The home at Barrett’s Mill Farm is in need of an addition to house the farm’s current co-owners and their families. Concord Housing Foundation (CHF) is raising funds for an expansion of the farmhouse to create adequate living space for Barrett’s Mill Farm co-owner Melissa Maxwell and her family.

Additional Info about the Barrett’s Mill Farm Project

Barrett’s Mill Farm is a jewel of a property that combines the conservation of beautiful and productive open space with affordable homes for the farmers who are crucial to the stewardship of that land. Concord owns the property and leases it to them, and the Town is responsible for maintenance of the buildings on the property.

The Barrett’s Mill Farmhouse has a single house containing two residences, housing the two farm managers and their families. The larger of the units has three bedrooms, while the smaller home has only one bedroom. There is no bedroom for the family’s toddler, who currently sleeps in his parents’ room.

The modest addition (16’ x 20’) proposed for the smaller unit would contain a family room on the first floor and a small bedroom and bathroom on the second. Since that home currently has the entry, living, dining, kitchen, and stair to the 2nd level all in one space (formerly a 2 car garage), more room is needed on both levels to accommodate the family that has expanded from two to three people.

The architecture of the addition would be in scale with the overall building, copying and extending it’s roof pitches and using dormers for space under the sloped roof in the new bedroom. The style of the windows, siding, and trim would match the existing.

The Farmhouse is Town property, made available to the farmers with the lease of the agricultural land. The expansion of this unit will create a second Town-owned homes for a farm family with one or more children, a net addition to the small number of affordable family homes in Concord.
